3D Model for Photosynthesis

This is a 3D model of the process of photosynthesis. As you can see, the model is of a leaf. Students had to label the parts of the plant as well as correctly place the arrows that describe photosynthesis. Students also created a "Recipe for Photosynthesis", where they listed the necessary ingredients for photosynthesis to occur and explained the process step by step in their own words. This activity goes with our unit on plant growth and reproduction. It is based on Next Generation Science Standards disciplinary core idea LS1.A, which applies to structure and function. Students should understand that plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction.

When I'm 64 Writing

For this writing assignment, students created a fictional piece that described their life as a 64 year old. Students based their work off of The Beatles song "When I'm 64". They followed the style presented in the music and created their own version. Of course this included listening to the song and discussing the author's purpose. We used the "Aging Booth" app to take photos to make them look 64. This assignment follows the Common Core Standards for english language arts for fourth grade. Students are following the writing process and producing products for a variety of genres.

Geometry Town

Geometry Town is a summative project used at the end of our geometry unit. For this project, students are creating their own town with the inclusion of some specific geometric items. For example, one task might be to create a bridge that connects two roads at an acute angle. Students are able to design their town however they would like. This assignment is aligned with fourth grade Common Core Standards for geometry, where students are asked to draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

Adverbots

The word "adverbot" comes from the words adverb and robot. During our study of adverbs, students create an adverbot that does some kind of work for them. Their adverbot must complete at least six tasks for them. For each task, they must include a description of the kind of work using an adverb. This follows the Common Core Standards for english language arts in the area of vocabulary acquisition and use where students are asked to demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

3D Contour Map of Mt. St. Helens

For this project, students create a 3D contour map of Mt. St. Helens. The map describes how the elevation of the land changed after the volcano erupted. Students use cardboard to show the changes in elevation. The colors at each elevation stay the same to show a clear comparison of before and after. This project ties into our social studies unit on the study of landforms.

Circuits Slides

This assignment gives students the opportunity to create a slides presentation about batteries and bulbs in a circuit. In their presentation, students create a drawing and a schematic to show batteries and bulbs in a series and in parallel. Students create this as a part of our science unit on electricity.
